OFFICIAL RETIREMENT OF MS. JACINTA AKATSA, EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF SMASE-AFRICA

SMASE-AFRICA formally announces the retirement of Ms. Jacinta Akatsa from active government service, including her distinguished roles as Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) and Executive Secretary of SMASE-AFRICA, effective Tuesday last week.

Ms. Akatsa concludes a remarkable seven-year tenure characterized by visionary, transformative leadership and an unwavering commitment to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across the African continent. Under her stewardship, SMASE-AFRICA strengthened strategic partnerships, expanded collaborative initiatives, and championed innovative approaches that have significantly contributed to improving the quality of STEM education for the African child.

Her leadership has been instrumental in fostering continental cooperation, enhancing teacher capacity, and positioning SMASE-AFRICA as a key driver of educational transformation. Her legacy is reflected not only in programs and policies but also in the strengthened networks and shared aspirations for Africa’s future.

Following her retirement, Ms. Akatsa has formally handed over her responsibilities to Madam Gladys Masai, who assumes the role of Acting Chief Executive Officer of CEMASTEA and Executive Secretary of SMASE-AFRICA. The organization expresses full confidence in her leadership as she continues to build on the strong foundation established.

Speaking on behalf of SMASE-AFRICA, the President, Prof. Benson Banda, expressed deep appreciation for Ms. Akatsa’s service:

In her farewell reflections, Ms. Akatsa described her tenure as a journey of “great learnings, collaborations, innovations, friendships, and wins for Africa,” expressing gratitude for the mentorship, trust, and support extended to her by SMASE-AFRICA leadership and partners.

As she transitions into retirement, SMASE-AFRICA extends its heartfelt gratitude and best wishes for continued fulfillment, good health, and success.
